Medical care must be provided for as long as necessary to treat the injury. In some cases, medical care will be required for a lifetime. In the District of Columbia and Maryland, the injured worker may choose a physician and is not required to treat with a doctor or facility selected by the employer and the insurance company. In Virginia, the employer/insurance company provide a panel of three physicians from which to choose. Medical treatment includes medically necessary care resulting from the injury such as doctor’s visits, testing, surgery, physical therapy, prescriptions, chiropractic treatment, assistive devices, home care if required, psychiatric care, etc.
